The researcher and organizational freak in me categorized my redirection over the last week into four categories: noting the feels, being present, quality time, and making smiles. Below is my experience with each of them.Read More
In my perfect world, I would own a device that allowed me to measure my body composition without seeing my weight. After all, weight is mainly about my body and gravity; it’s not a guaranteed measure of how healthy I am. Over the last couple years, I’ve tried my best to ignore that number when I take measurements, and adjust my concentration to my smart scale’s app for muscle and fat metrics, but that scale weight is always there in the background. As much as I try, some of those subliminal messages from the modern health and beauty industries get to me, and it sucks.
So I’m stomping the scale this February.
For 28 days, I will not take any measurements of any kind. Instead, whenever I feel the urge, I will either take note of my non-scale metrics (sleep, stress, and energy levels) or redirect my focus to something positive and happy, like touching base with an old friend, meditating, enjoying a cup of tea or a facial, or simply being in the moment - even if it that moment is silence.
My goal is to recognize how quickly I tend to focus on numbers, even when trying not to, and to give myself grace and patience to learn how to try to switch that focus to other meaningful activities to make me happy and manage stress and negative thoughts. I want to embrace more non-scale victories, such as how I feel and learning to love my body for what it can do and how it looks.
These types of challenges are always better when done in the company of others, and I have a few friends that have said they would like to commit with me, but there is no limit to how big of a group joins me in this journey. Will you be one of them?
Follow me on social media (@liveimperfectaf) and follow/use the hashtag #ImperfectAFStompstheScale on social media to see my updates, the updates of others, and to get support. I’ll be checking that hashtag regularly, and posting tips to stay motivated on my social media feeds. I’ll be along for the journey to support you, and I appreciate any support you’d like to give me too!
So, are you ready? We have a week to go and I can’t wait. Let me know if you’re joining me in February and what you hope to gain from the challenge. I’d love to hear from you.
